Movies I Can't Wait To See

Alright, so by now you all know I'm a big movie guy. I love them. I want my life to be a movie. It would be so much better that way. Well, assuming I have the right director... Anyways, we're moving out of the summer blockbuster and into the quality/potential Oscar candidate time of the year. I'm talking about the fall.

So in this post, I'm going to show you some movies that I basically can't wait for. Now, I'm not saying that these movies are going to win, let alone be nominated for, Oscars. Some surely won't (see the last entry). All I'm saying is, the fall season is when we see most of the movies that show up at the Oscars, so it's naturally turned into the season of quality films. Plain and simple. Also, these are just my opinions (as promised in my blog description), but know that they are coming from a guy who loves movies. Strike that, loves good movies, and absolutely hates bad ones.

Anyways, I'll give you a synopsis (IMDb.com), the (relevant) cast, and reasons why I can't wait to see them. I'll also give you trailers so that you can see for yourself. As always, just click on the pictures and they will take you to the trailer site. Enjoy.

The U.S. vs. John Lennon

Synopsis: A documentary on the life of John Lennon, with a focus on the time in his life when he transformed from a musician into an antiwar activist.

Cast: John Lennon (obviously), and many others involved at the time. It's a documentary...

Why I want to see it: Ok, so it wouldn't matter what it was about or how good it will be. It's about one of The Beatles, so it's a lock for me. Other than that though, it's written and directed by two guys (David Leaf & John Scheinfeld) who have done lots of documentaries on musicians in the past, so they know what they're doing. It also documents a very high-tension time in the U.S. when peace activists were at their peak. John Lennon was a HUGE activist, and hopefully this movie shows both how great he was and how borderline insane he became. I love John Lennon, and will consequently love this movie.

The Last Kiss

Synopsis: Anxieties threaten the future of a domesticated couple.

Cast: Zach Braff, Jacinda Barrett (wife in Ladder 49), Rachel Bilson (Summer from the OC).

Why I want to see it: Number one ultimate reason to see this movie is it's written by Paul Haggis, the same guy that wrote Crash and Million Dollar Baby. It's most likely another amazing script. Anyone take the bet that his movies got 3 for 3? Second, Zach Braff does absolutely no wrong. His first movie, Garden State, is on virtually everyone's list of favorites, he's great in Scrubs, and he just directed a music video for Joshua Radin, who is one of my favorite new artists. Seriously, the guy is good, check him out. Third, Rachel Bilson is hot, and she's playing the object of Zach Braff's lust, which means she'll be even hotter! I don't think this movie has the slightest chance of failing.

The Science Of Sleep

Synopsis: A man held captive by the people in his dreams tries to wake himself up and take control of his own imaginings.

Cast: Michel Gondry (writer & director), Gael García Bernal (Che Guevara in The Motorcycle Diaries).

Why I want to see it: Michel Gondry is the guy who wrote and directed Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, and recently directed Dave Chappelle's Block Party. Eternal Sunshine is another one of those movies that's one everyone's list of favorites, and this movie appears similar in look, feel, style, and genre. This is probably the movie on this list that I'm MOST excited about. Also, Gael García Bernal is an incredible actor. I first saw him in Amores Perros (translated to "Love's a Bitch) back in 2000, and he was great. Ever since then, he's been amazing in everything. I can't wait for it.

Little Miss Sunshine

(Watch the TEASER, it's better than the trailer)

Synopsis: A family determined to get their young daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant take a cross-country trip in their VW bus.

Cast: Steve Carell, Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette.

Why I want to see it: First of all, it looks funny, and being that the plot plays a small role in the film, it looks like it is a comedy based on character development and situational humor, which I like a lot. Second, this might be Steve Carell's coming out party (pun 75% intended, as he plays a gay guy in the movie). He's still being funny, but in more of a dramatic role than we've ever seen. If he does well, he could pull off a Jim Carrey career and flourish on both sides of the spectrum (minus Fun With Dick & Jane). I hope he does well.

Transformers

Synopsis: Dueling alien races, the Autobots and the Decepticons, bring their battle to Earth, leaving the future of humankind hanging in the balance.

Cast: Nobody good, but it's not about the people, it's about the Transformers!

Why I want to see it: First of all, "Dueling alien races" has never sounded or looked (so far) this cool. The teaser just came out, but it really is a teaser; it doesn't give you anything. Watch it anyways, but then go here for pictures of the concept Camero they're using, and here for a BUNCH of other set pictures. It looks pretty hardcore. Second reason I want to see it: live-action Transformers. Wow. And Decepticons! Hell yeah! If they do this right, which rumor has it they are, it can be the best cartoon-turned-movie EVER! So, I realize this isn't coming out this fall, it's due next summer, but big deal, I had to include it. It's the Transformers! They're robots in disguise after all.

So that's my most anticipated movies of the summer, and then Transformers thrown in there for good measure. Tell me what you think. What are you looking forward to seeing?

I thought I was the only person that had even heard of The Science of Sleep, let alone that another person wanted to see it. In a way, it reminds me of Big Fish, one of my all time favorite movies. So I will definately be seeing that. The other movie on your list that I'm really deked up for is the Transformers. Optimus Prime is the shit, and Megatron can kiss the blackest part of my ass. Next summer needs to get here sooner.

I really want to see The U.S. vs. John Lennon and Little Miss Sunshine........ I actually want to see all of those movies. The one movie that is going to be really good that hasn't been talked about is The Descent. It has already been reviewed some and received good reviews. I don't even like scary movies at all but when I saw the trailer for this movie I wanted to see it really bad. I'll tell you though next summer is going to be crazy! Indiana Jones 4...prepare yourself.
