College Football: Week 1 Roundup

College Football is back! And I don't think anyone is as happy as this dude from Appalachian St. However, I am very happy as well. I love college football, and though I may be the biggest homer in the world and the least capable person to be writing about it, I am doing so anyways. If you want a solid college football preview, check out my roommate Jake's post here. (P.S. He's actually a writer, so his post is well written, intelligent, and funny, unlike some others...cough). But if you want a crappy week 1 review, read on.

Ducks 48 - Houston 27
You know I'm starting off with Oregon. I'm not going to get too deep into it, but I do have a few things to say. First, being on the turf in a packed Autzen Stadium is amazing. This was the first game I worked on the field as an intern, and even though I didn't watch the game from the field (I may soon), I did spend a good chunk of time on the field, and it was incredible. I wish I played college football. But, about the game, this wasn't the best performance from the Ducks. We won, and we showed flashes of greatness, but we have a ways to go. Our defense was, overall, lacking, but the 5 or 6 turnovers we had were all great, and show we have the skills, and now just need to tighten it all up. Also, I'll give my props to Dixon. I gave him crap for leaving this summer (though I didn't blame him), but he really showed up today. 170-something yards rushing? Baseball what? A few more weeks with his receivers, though, should bring out a better, more confident throwing QB. JJ and J-Stew showed up too, as usual, contributing to out big running presence. Otherwise, this looked like a prep game for Michigan. We played conservative and didn't really give anything away, which I chalked up to getting ready for next week. Which brings me to headline #2.

Michigan 32 - Appalachian St 34
Wow, Jake, what happened? I have to say, that last pass from Henne was amazing to put them in field goal range, but they just couldn't finish the job. While it was an amazing upset, I wasn't too happy, because now they're just going to be pissed as hell, so next week they'll come in and blow us out. I hope I'm wrong, but I would have rather been the underdog, and not the "second shitty team to beat Michigan" as we will now be dubbed if we win. But still, Michigan, Appalachian St?... Wow, that's all I have to say. Watch the last 1:44:

Oklahoma 79, Louisville 73, 10 other teams with 50+ points
This weekend was ridiculous as far as the amount of points scored. I thought 73 was a lot on Friday, but then Oklahoma scores 79! In my Yahoo! Pick 'Em, I didn't think they'd beat the 40.5 point spread. Come on, it's a 41 point win, no way... I was wrong. It kind of makes me understand why all these ranked teams play Division I-AA teams: a HUGE confidence boost. Well, except Michigan of course... Wow, just wow.

Portland St. rushes for -10 yards
In local news, the Portland St. Vikings lost to McNeese St. tonight, who's defense gave up -10 yards rushing. I've never actually heard of a team finishing a game with negative rushing yards. First quarter, sure. First half, rarely. Whole game? Was the defense that good or offense that bad? Colin, Brett, what do you have to say for yourselves?

Otherwise, it was a pretty run-of-the-mill week 1. Not to many solid match ups, and thus not too many upsets. If you like blowouts though, it was great...I guess. But hey, college football is back, and that's what matters. Now, if you want that east coast bias, go read, well, anything, and if you want to hear a bunch of bullshit about how Notre Dame will win 10 games, go listen to crazy Lou Holtz. But hey, if you don't have time, I'll just tell you now, they won't win more than 7. Thanks for reading.
