Apple Unveils New iPod Touch

Apple revealed the new iPod today. It's basically an iPhone without the phone. It's the same size, same screen, same interface, but it's not a phone. It's much cheaper, and it's got wi-fi, so if you're in a wi-fi hot spot, you can surf the internet just like on the iPhone, just without the data plan. So basically, you don't have to pay anything to surf the internet as long as you're in a hotspot, which is pretty cool. If I were an iPhone owner and switched from a phone I liked, I would be kind of pissed right now. For 8GB, the "iPod touch" is $299 where the same capacity iPhone was $599. Ouch. So now, I don't want an iPhone, just a new iPod, cause my phone works fine.

They also redesigned the Nano. It looks like an iPod video cut in half. Just about the same size screen as the iPod video, just a smaller unit. Made for movies. Same colors, and apparently it's got a 24 hour music playback battery life. That's pretty impressive.

Now, Apple is a company that gets it right when it comes to marketing. Steve Jobs must be a marketing mastermind, because he gets it. Think about it, Apple is the only company that can stir up ridiculous amounts of buzz by putting out a press release simply to announce a press release. Of course, when ever there are announcements, it's normally for something great, but still, the power they have over their customers is pretty incredible.

But something really interesting, as far as Apple announcements usually go, is that Apple's stock dropped $7.40/share today. WOW! And even though since the the time the rumor came out that a new iPod line was being released, the stock has done very well, the drop in its price today came mostly around the time of the announcement, and just kept falling. Has Wall Street gotten tired of Apple's announcement antics? Maybe it's because this iPod is kind of a cop out in that it's just the iPhone without the phone, and not something completely new, but I still don't see why that would make a difference, because the iPhone was AMAZING!

While it may not have the capacity of my older one (which is full), I think I'm still going to be getting one, if for nothing else, to have a $300 full internet browser in my pocket. What do you all think?
