Tiger & Floyd: a good day for America
It was an emotional day for Tiger as he won his 11th major championship this morning. Feelings of joy and sadness overwhelmed him after he tapped in his final putt on 18 to claim his 3rd British Open title; his second in as many years. After he sank the final putt, he went over to his caddy, hugged him, and broke down. And who could blame him? He said afterwards that all the feelings of missing his father rushed over him and he wished he could have been there to see it. But after the feelings of sadness subsided, the feeling of joy came, because after all, he just won the British Open. Again, his 11th major, and his 3rd British Open. He won this event last year, and first in 2000. This win puts him at 11-0 when leading after Saturday, and 7-0 when leading after Friday. If he can continue this run, he will undoubtedly be the greatest golfer in the history of the sport.
While Tiger was busy winning the Bristish Open, American cyclist Floyd Landis was busy winning the Tour de France. Floyd overcame an 8:00+ deficit in the final stages to win the Tour. It was as amazing a comeback as the event has ever seen, and a very worthy successor of Lance. The amazing part of this story is that Floyd has a very bad hip. He's going to need surgery to replace one of his hips soon. He can't run, he has trouble sitting, he walks with a limp, yet he can ride a bike better, faster, and longer than anyone else in the world, and he proved that this year.
Congratulations to both Tiger and Floyd. It was a good day for America.
