Pirates Opening Weekend
Well, since early Friday morning (midnight showings), people have been going to see Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest like crazy! It is breaking box office records by the day. On Friday, it set the all-time opening day record with $55,549,000, breaking the previous record of $50,013,859 set by Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. It hit $100 million on Saturday, becoming the fastest movie ever to reach that mark, again beating Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith's old record, which was 3 days. It is also estimated to make a weekend total of $132,028,000, which would absoultely destroy the old record of $114,844,116 held by Spider-Man. You can check out all the stats at Boxofficemojo.com
The funny thing about all this is that EVERYONE agrees that this movie isn't as good as the first. A lot of people flat out don't like it, and most say it's just ok. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 53%, which earns a "Rotten" rating. I still plan to see it, as I haven't yet, but I don't expect a winner. Regardless of what people say about it though, they all say it's a fun movie to watch, and with a $225 million budget, it better be. While this movie is breaking records, I don't expect it to go much farther than this, because I doubt a lot of people will be seeing it again. Either way, pretty impressive numbers for a mediocre movie.
